Egypt’s Quran Manuscripts Collection Added to UNESCO Memory of the World Register

The National Library of Egypt’s collection of Quran manuscripts have been added to the UNESCO Memory of the World Register.
The registration was celebrated in a ceremony held Sunday night by Egypt’s National Library and the Islamic Treasure Society, Al-Dastour daily reported.
 The ceremony included a seminar featuring Quranic calligraphy. Nassar Mansour, Arab calligraphy scholar at Oman Islamic University delivered a lecture at the seminar.
UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme is an international initiative launched to safeguard the documentary heritage of humanity against collective amnesia, neglect, the ravages of time and climatic conditions, and willful and deliberate destruction.
The Memory of the World Register lists documentary heritage which has been recommended by the International Advisory Committee, and endorsed by the Director-General of UNESCO, as corresponding to the selection criteria regarding world significance and outstanding universal value.
