Damascus welcomes outcome of Tehran conference on Syria

The Syrian Foreign Ministry has welcomed the results of a recent conference in Tehran which sought to find a diplomatic solution to the ongoing crisis in the Arab country.

The Tehran conference “stressed the importance of halting violence and starting a national dialogue among the Syrians” to find a solution to the crisis in Syria and help the Arab nation “determine their future without foreign interference,” The Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman said in a statement released on Thursday.

On May 29, Iran hosted an international conference on Syria to help find a political solution to the crisis in the Arab country. The event brought together delegates from around 40 countries.

Damascus appreciates Iran’s efforts to contribute to finding a political solution to the turmoil through comprehensive national dialogue as well as Tehran’s call for an end to foreign military support for terrorists, the statement added.

Syria also lauds the participation of representatives of 40 countries in the meeting, which indicates their true friendship with the Syrian people, it concluded.

Syria has been in crisis since March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of Syrian security forces, have been killed in the unrest.

Iran has repeatedly expressed its opposition to any foreign intervention in Syria's internal affairs, stressing that inclusive dialogue and national reconciliation as well as free elections are the keys to resolving the unrest in the Arab country.
