DENOUNCING THE DISRESPECT TO THE HOLY QURAN

DECLARATION OF THE ISLAMIC CENTRE OF ENGLAND DENOUNCING THE DISRESPECT
SHOWN TOWARDS THE HOLY QUR’AN

The Christian minister Terry Jones had announced from Florida, U.S. that on the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks he will carry out the burning of the Noble Qur’an. This threat, having gotten out of hand, contradicts the most self evident principles rooted in both the intellect and religion. This is because the monotheistic religions respect all of the divine books and the Holy Qur’an itself requires all Muslims not to discriminate between any of the divinely sent prophets:
“Say, ‘We believe in God and that which was revealed to us and that which was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and the descendants (of Jacob) and that which was given to Moses and Jesus and that which was given to (all) the prophets from their Lord. We do not discriminate between one and another among them and we submit to Him’” (Qur’an: 2:136).
This threat shows that this minister is psychologically and intellectually unbalanced because he is insulting the holy book of one billion Muslims and thus he does not have one iota of the tolerance that goes with his excuse that he has the right to freedom of opinion. This is because freedom of opinion is only respected as long as the rights of others are not violated and those things that are held sacred are not subject to insult.
This kind of attack should be condemned by all the divine religions, civilized communities, and nations of the world, otherwise the doors to the unrestrained levelling of such insults and desecrations from every direction would be thrown wide open.
We, our part, categorically condemn this behaviour which is incompatible with the principles of justice, fairness, and the mutual coexistence of nations. At the same time we praise all those who have taken a stance against this divisive behaviour that aims to create conflict and antagonism between the followers of religion and jeopardize our peaceful coexistence.
We also call upon all other religious and non religious organizations to express their revulsion by condemning this despicable and incendiary kind of behaviour.
